Egypt rocked by Hegazi blow

Egypt and Fiorentina defender Ahmed Hegazi will be sidelined for up to six months after damaging the cruciate ligament in training, the Italian club said.

Fiorentina doctor Paolo Manetti confirmed the news to the club’s website, adding that the 21-year-old will undergo surgery this week.

Hegazi, who has just begun to push for a place in Fiorentina’s line-up by scoring on his full debut last week, was injured while trying to block a shot during a practice match on Monday.

He is now certain to miss Egypt’s World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe next March and remains doubtful for the second game in Harare in June.

Hegazi is regarded as one of the key members of Bob Bradley’s backline since the American had taken charge of the Egypt first team in September 2011.
