Mido is close to Barnsley’s exit door after the ‘plan to resurrect his career had failed’, admitted manager Keith Hill.
Hill, who signed Mido on a free transfer from Zamalek, has only seen his Egyptian recruit make a single appearance with the club, thanks to a series of injury and fitness problems.
Despite recovering from a long-term hamstring injury recently, the 29-year-old has yet to start a game for the Championship strugglers, much to the frustration of his manager.
"It's a definite possibility that he could be going. We're discussing it with his representatives at the moment," Barnsley boss Hill told BBC Radio Sheffield
"Every player has to be compatible with a manager's vision and I ignored a lot of people when I signed him but it just hasn't happened.
"It's amicable and it's unfortunate that the plan to resurrect his career hasn't worked out here."
Mido’s injury and fitness problems had a devastating impact on his career of late, which saw him struggle to get anyway near the form he enjoyed at Tottenham in 2005-2006.
The Egypt international, who was released by Zamalek last summer due to his continuous injuries, has yet to make an appearance for his country since a friendly against Malawi in 2009.
