Former Real Madrid star Guti has announced his retirement from football.

The 35-year-old midfielder has been a free agent since May after his contract with Turkish club Besiktas ran out.

He was linked with Premier League club West Ham but a move didn't materialize.

Once a vice-captain of Real Madrid, Guti said he isn't interested to play outside Europe and finally decided to quit

Meteb back for Ahli, Soliman in

Emad Meteb returns for Ahli in the CAF Champions League clash with Sunshine Stars as Walid Soliman makes the provisional squad.

Egypt striker Meteb has been included after recovering from a kidney problem that kept him out of the semi-final first-leg draw in Nigeria.

Winger Soliman, who has been struggling with a knee injury, is included although he remains a major doubt to start for the Reds on Sunday after doctor Ihab Ali had declared that rest would be better for him.

Ivorian striker Oussou Konan is also back after recovering from injury, while full-back Sayed Moawad missed out as the only major absentee in Hossam Al-Badri team.

Egypt coach plays down Zidan return

Egypt assistant manager Diaa Al-Sayed played down reports suggesting that Mohamed Zidan would be recalled in the near future.

Some reports suggested that Zidan, who plays for UAE side Bani Yas, could well return to the national team’s fold in the next friendly against Georgia, but the Egypt coach insists that all foreign-based players would only be named by the end of this month.

“We will announce the names of all foreign-based players by the end of October, so what’s the reason behind bringing up such an issue now?” Al-Sayed told FilGoal.com.

“Plus Zidan is injured and his medical status is still unclear as the final decision will be made by –manager - Bob Bradley.”

Zidan has yet to make an appearance for Egypt since pulling out of a CAN qualifier against Central African Republic back in June as Bradley stated that the 30-year-old’s return is ‘not guaranteed’.

The 30-year-old, who is believed to have angered Bradley and Co. following his decision to skip the CAR qualifier, is currently nursing a hamstring injury and is expected to return to action by the end of October.

After facing Congo and Tunisia in the UAE this month, Egypt are due to meet with Georgia on November 14.

Three former Africa Cup of Nations champions have been drawn together in next year’s finals as Ivory Coast, Tunisia and Algeria clash in a group of death.

The three powerhouses comprise Group D along with Togo, who will play for the first time after being banned from the previous two tournaments.

Hosts South Africa will play the opening match against debutants Cape Verde as the duo compete with Morocco and Angola in a tough Group A.

Ghana, DR Congo, Mali and Niger comprise Group B as defending champions Zambia take on Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia in Group C.

Ahli claim Bayern meeting

Ahli have revealed they will play a friendly match against Bayern Munich next January in Doha.

The Cairo club announced a tour of three friendly games in January, including two in Doha against Bundesliga leaders Bayern and Qatari side Al-Jaish.

According to the Reds’ website, the tour starts with a meeting against Primera Liga side Getafe in Spain on January 2.

Ahli then should meet Bayern on January 6, two days before taking on Al-Jaish.

German giants Bayern, who edged Ahli 2-1 last January in Doha as well, are expected to be spending their mid-season break in the Gulf.

Getafe, on the other hand, will resume their league campaign at Rayo Vallecano only four days after their proposed game with Ahli.

It remains to be seen how Ahli will be able to deal with their fixture list in case the domestic league was resumed in the near future.

Ahli’s current schedule only includes a couple of games though as they clash with Esperance of Tunisia in the CAF Champions League double-header on November 4 and 17.

Ahli hold on to Egypt internationals

Ahli have requested withdrawing their international players from Egypt’s friendly with Georgia on November 14.

Egypt are supposed to play a friendly match with the European minnows in the UAE, only three days before the return of the Champions League final against Georgia.

“I’m afraid that the date of the Georgia match clashes with our preparation for the final,” Ahli football director Sayed Abdul-Hafiz told FilGoal.com.

“It will be hard for our players to feature with Egypt and then join us.”

Ahli’s internationals have yet to be named by coach Bob Bradley, even so the list is likely to include regulars Ahmed Fathi, Geddo and Mohamed Abou-Treika.

Elmohamady’s Hull down Mido’s Barnsley

Ahmed Elmohamady helped Hull City move to fifth place in the English Championship with a 1-0 victory over Barnsley.

The only goal of the game was scored after 16 minutes by striker Sone Aluko, who was at the end of a corner taken by Elmohamady.

The Egypt wing-back played the whole game against Mido’s Barnsley, with the latter still unfit to feature following his long-term injury.

Mido is expected to miss the next couple of games as well, having said he would return on November 17 for the away fixture against Bolton.

Ahli, Zamalek represent Egypt in CL

Ahli and Zamalek will retain their places as Egypt’s representatives in the CAF Champions League next season, the Egyptian FA said.

With last season called off following the Port-Said disaster, Cairo’s top duo has been automatically qualified according to their league position in the 2010-2011 campaign.

Ahli are currently vying for the continental title with holders Esperance, while Zamalek have been ousted from the group stage.

ENPPI, who clinched the latest Egypt Cup edition in 2011, will once again compete in the African Confederation Cup.

The disappointment continues for Alexandrian side Harras Hodoud, who were impressively on top of the league table before the season came to an abrupt end last February.

Ramzy eyeing quality signings

Newly-hired Lierse coach Hany Ramzy plans to reinforce his squad with ‘quality players’ in the January transfer window as he begins his spell with the Belgian side.

The 43-year-old has been unveiled as Lierse manager this week, in a historic decision that made him the first-ever Egyptian to take charge of a top-flight European club.

“I noticed that we have a good fan base. We have supporters that really love the club and this is one thing you have to build on,” Ramzy told Lierse TV.

“But in the field we have some problems. We have some missing quality players in some positions.

“I will speak with the chairman as it is very important to transfer in some good players with quality.”

Ramzy makes his debut against Gent at the weekend, in an attempt to lift Lierse off the bottom three.

Al-Shennawi could join Lierse

Egypt goalkeeper Ahmed Al-Shennawi could be joining coach Hany Ramzy at Belgian side Lierse despite being on loan with Zamalek.

The 21-year-old revealed he has been contacted by his former Egypt U-23 boss Ramzy, who has just been named Lierse coach.

“Coach Hany Ramzy called me to ask about the possibility of me joining Lierse,” Al-Shennawi told FilGoal.com.

“Personally I accepted the offer but I must wait for the approval of Zamalek.”

Al-Shennawi is on a season-long loan from Masri, who are banned from domestic football next season for their involvement in last February's Port-Said calamity.

However, with the uncertain future of domestic football in Egypt, the goalkeeping prodigy could be leaving Cairo in the winter break.

Al-Shennawi may well be between the posts when Egypt meet Georgia in a friendly game on Wednesday night, with number one Essam Al-Hadari doubtful.

League could return in December - FA

The Egyptian FA said that an agreement was met with higher authorities to resume domestic football next month.

The association announced that a fruitful meeting was held between FA members and top officials from the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Sports on Thursday.

As the FA renewed its request to resume the Premier League, all parties agreed on the importance of recommencing the competition which has been disrupted since February.

However, an official announcement shall be confirmed in 10 days when the FA’s suggestions are being further assessed by authorities.

Meanwhile, the new season of the Egyptian second division has kicked off on Wednesday, with a number of fixtures taking place in six groups over the country on Thursday.

Two groups

In the same subject, Sports Minister El-Amry Farouk has revealed that should the competition be officially resumed next month, top-flight teams will be split to two groups.

“Everyone has agreed that forming two groups of Premier League clubs would be much better,” Farouk said at a press conference.

“It is the ideal system because we are running out of time.

“Of course Ahli will be on top of one group and Zamalek will head the other.”

Konan wanted in Saudi Arabia

Ahli will consider an offer from Saudi club Hajr for out-of-favor striker Oussou Konan, who has just joined in five months ago.

Konan, on a three-year contract with Ahli, is targeted by his former MCDR coach Tarek Yehia who is currently in charge of Saudi league strugglers Hajr.

Despite his short time with the team, Ahli did not rule out the Ivorian’s sale as they said on their website that the offer will be considered in the near future.

Konan has been a surprise exclusion from Ahli’s squad for the Champions League final match against Esperance.

He scored one goal in five appearances for Hossam Al-Badri’s tea, who have Geddo, Al-Sayed Hamdi, Emad Meteb and Dominique da Silva upfront.

Zidan urges Egyptians to join UAE league

Bani Yas striker Mohamed Zidan has advised several Egyptian players to switch to the Emirate league, according to a local newspaper.

Zidan, who joined UAE side Bani Yas on a free transfer from Mainz in the close season, praised the Emirate league, citing the ‘tough competition’ at top of the table as a sign of improvement.

“It is true there are some Egyptian players who contacted me to enquire about the possibility of playing here,” Zidan was quoted by Emirate media

“I think it would be better for them to come to the UAE because of the easier lifestyle here. The UAE has developed a lot as a country.

“Also the Emirate league has become a strong league due to the tough competition between more than five teams for the summit.”

According to Emirate reports, some Egypt players including Ahli stars Ahmed Fathi and Hossam Ghaly had contacted agents during their camp in the Gulf nation last month to look for a club in the UAE.

Egypt backtrack on Yemen friendly hours after announcing

Egypt will be facing Qatar instead of Yemen, a few hours after the FA announced a friendly meeting with the Yemeni first team.

Without setting a date for the fixtures, the FA said earlier on Thursday that Egypt will play two warm-up games against Yemen and Hungary without players of Ahli and the military national team.

However, the Egyptian FA’s website issued a new statement reading that the Yemen game has been cancelled and that an alternative friendly against Qatar shall take place on December 28.

The Hungary match could still be staged though, with the FA saying that it might be a double meeting with the European minnows on December 5 and 8 in Hurghada.

The decision to pick Qatar and Hungary is a bit surprising, knowing that coach Bob Bradley has requested warm-up games against African nations ahead of next year’s World Cup qualifiers.

Egypt will face Zimbabwe in March in their next competitive fixture.

Hassan and Treika friends to play for Asyut victims

Ahmed Hassan revealed that an all-star charity match featuring Mohamed Abou-Treika and a number of prominent Egypt stars will be held to aid the families of the Asyut disaster victims.

Egypt was rocked by the horrific death of plus-50 children in a bus crash in Asyut this month, with high-profile players like Hassan and Abou-Treika showing sympathy to the damaged families.

Hassan and Abou-Treika made separate visits to the upper-Egypt governorate as the former declared that they intend to do more for the sake of the families.

Maximum benefit

“I have an agreement with Abou-Treika to organize an exhibition game for the Asyut accident victims. The revenues of this match shall aid the families of the deceased,” Hassan told Zamalek’s website.

“We are looking forward to the ideal way of organizing such an event, so that the families can get the maximum benefit from it.

“During my visit I realized that the families have only made collective demands rather than asking for personal favors. It is amazing.

“For example, they wish to see a school built in the name of their kids. They do not want to be ignored by authorities.”

Egypt coach defends Bradley, warns of web news

Egypt’s second man Diaa Al-Sayed vehemently denies that head coach Bob Bradley has accused FA officials of being ‘ignorant’.

Several websites and newspapers claimed that Bradley is ‘frustrated’ with the new FA board’s lack of communication skills, while others said he intends to sue the association over late wages.

But coach Al-Sayed was quick to refute the allegations, insisting that the American has no problem with any official inside the FA board and warning of made-up web content.

Completely untrue!

“I don’t want officials to deal with all web news as if it’s a fact. This would be very difficult. It would ruin a lot of things for us,” Al-Sayed told Al-Hayat TV.

“The Facebook and the websites can flare up things in this country. Bradley has never been disrespectful to anyone.

“I usually attend all the FA meetings and Bradley has never said this. He has never accused FA officials of being week in language nor did he say they are ignorant!

“Two days ago I read a story that Bradley intends to sue the FA (over wages). He then asked me to deny it quickly because this is completely untrue.

“What makes me anxious is that when officials tend to believe these stories if there is a campaign or a conspiracy against us.

“Bradley and I used to deal with nearly one person and an interim board for a year. Why would he cause a problem and complain when there is a hired and fully-established FA board?”

Since his appointment in September 2011, Bradley has been anything but controversial despite a series of hindrances threatening his work with the national team.

Zimbabwe hire German Pagels for Egypt tie

Zimbabwe have changed their managing staff ahead of the next competitive double-header against Egypt, appointing German coach Klaus-Dieter Pagels as interim coach.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) announced the hiring of the 63-year-old German, who has been working as a technical advisor for the team for two years.

Pagels is left with the tough task of reshuffling the Zimbabwe squad after the whole team were disbanded and coach Rahman Gumbo stepped down, following the failure to make the Nations Cup.

"I've seen so many talented young players here and I will want to bring in more players from the domestic league into the national team in a short time," he told BBC Sport.

"The reason that I said I can take the job is because I'm not afraid of anything, and from my experience I've seen so many things in football, good things and bad things, and it's not a problem for me to handle it."

Zimbabwe visit group leaders Egypt in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers on March 22, before hosting the seven-time African champions in Harare next June.

The Warriors have just one point from two games so far in Group G.

Geddo leaving Ahli

Ahli star striker Geddo says he has decided to leave the African champions amid the sustained disruption of domestic football.

“I made my decision. If there is still no football, I will leave Ahli after the Club World Cup,” Geddo told FilGoal.com.

“I think leaving Egypt would be a logical decision. There is no football and thus there is no need to stay without playing.

“Surely I would prefer a move to Europe but I don’t mind playing for an Arab club.”

The Egyptian Premier League has been suspended since last February’s Port-Said disaster and a decision to call off the season seems to be on the cards, amid the ongoing political unrest in the country.

Ahli, who flied to Japan on Saturday to take part in the Club World Cup, will continue playing Champions League football next season as well.

The Reds won a seventh straight title this term, a triumph that Geddo played a vital role in achieving.

Egypt rocked by Hegazi blow

Egypt and Fiorentina defender Ahmed Hegazi will be sidelined for up to six months after damaging the cruciate ligament in training, the Italian club said.

Fiorentina doctor Paolo Manetti confirmed the news to the club’s website, adding that the 21-year-old will undergo surgery this week.

Hegazi, who has just begun to push for a place in Fiorentina’s line-up by scoring on his full debut last week, was injured while trying to block a shot during a practice match on Monday.

He is now certain to miss Egypt’s World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe next March and remains doubtful for the second game in Harare in June.

Hegazi is regarded as one of the key members of Bob Bradley’s backline since the American had taken charge of the Egypt first team in September 2011.

Egypt claim Ghana friendly

The Egyptian FA claim a friendly match agreement with Ghana in the first half of January despite the latter initially announcing a game with Tunisia during that period.

The FA said on its official website that the national team will play two friendly games against Ghana and Ivory Coast in January without specifying a specific date for both fixtures.

Egypt coach Diaa Al-Sayed, however, had stated few days ago that they could play Ghana on January 13, the same date that would see the Black Stars take on Tunisia.

Al-Sayed's comments were still unconfirmed until the FA issued a statement with the two friendlies on Tuesday.

It remains to be seen whether Ghana, who kick off their African Cup of Nations campaign on January 20, will face Egypt or Tunisia as the Black Stars only have the first half of next month available for warm-up games.

Egypt's friendly schedule has been out of sorts recently, with a number of fixtures called off or replaced.

The Pharaohs, seven-time African Champions, failed to make it to the competition for the second time in a row as they play the first competitive game against Zimbabwe next March.
